Abstract

“Virus as a metaphor: how digital technologies shape a parallel pandemic” analyzes the metaphorical epidemic of misinformation in the context of the literal epidemic of covid-19, providing an epistemological review of the current state of public communication. The misinformation, whose definition is reviewed here, has analogical origin, but gains scale with the help of social networks, threatening illuminist institutions such as journalism and democracy itself. Through a case study related to the current pandemic, the first health crisis of this proportion to find a world in the process of digitalization, this article ponders on the importance of the media as a mediation institution, points out its own contribution to the current crisis of disinformation and lists possible solutions.
