Condolences on the passing of Michel Misse

2025-08-14

Today, August 14, 2025, Michel Misse, a retired full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a professor in the Graduate Program in Sociology and Anthropology (PPGSA/UFRJ), and founder of the Center for the Study of Citizenship, Conflict, and Urban Violence (NECVU), passed away in Rio de Janeiro. The sociologist's body will lie in state this Friday, August 15, at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences (IFCS/UFRJ), located in Largo do São Francisco, downtown Rio de Janeiro. He will then be cremated in a ceremony privately reserved for family and friends.

A pioneer in the sociology of violence, Michel trained and mentored more than a generation of sociologists, currently working at leading universities in Brazil and around the world. His classes—precise, captivating, and welcoming—left indelible lessons for his students and advisees. Michel is gone, but his legacy lives on as one of the most important in contemporary sociology.

A member of the Editorial Board of our journal Terceiro Milênio, it was in this journal that Michel Misse, alongside Paulo Roberto de Andrade Castro, published one of his last articles: "The organization of the animal game and the monopoly of the exploitation of all illicit games in its territory in Rio de Janeiro."

To his family, friends, and colleagues, our condolences!
