Agroecology and Environmental Education from an anti-capitalist perspective

Abstract

The book Anti-capitalist Environmental Education: Destructive Production, Associated Labor, and Agroecology by Novaes demonstrates that it is possible to understand forms of work based on agroecology and associated labor as an emancipatory possibility in the face of destructive capitalist production. For the author, social struggles confront and question the expropriation of land, as well as the power of transnational corporations and the State, which promote what he calls planned obsolescence, resulting in the gradual destruction of the planet's living conditions. The author presents the experience of agroecology schools created by the Landless Workers' Movement (Movimento Sem Terra - MST), which focus on anti-capitalist education, creating a practical alternative in addressing environmental and social problems. Novaes raises various points to clarify how ecocapitalism disguises itself as a solution but only serves the continued interests of agribusiness with its pro-capitalist environmental education approach.
